How We Met:

In mid-October of 2000, I attended a study session for a biology course hosted at Andrew's dorm by his friend, Ryan at RIT.  Andrew came in after he had worked his shift at the Ritz, an on-campus eatery.  He proved very annoying, as he coaxed Ryan to ask him a biology question despite the fact he was an Engineering major at the time.  He answered the question (What is a glycolipid?) correctly.  This angered me greatly as I had been studying for hours.  I expressed my frustration by throwing things at him (pens, notebooks, and a calculator) until he left the room.  He asked some friends about me after the incident, but the people he asked were not able to get us back together at the time.  Then, on December 1, 2000, fate intervened once again.  Andrew was on the second floor of my dorm this time, visiting with friends.  Kit, a mutual friend, decided to see if anyone from the first floor would want to join the party upstairs.  Andrew accompanied her downstairs, where we met once again.  I sat next to him at the party (reluctantly) where he unleashed a salvo of terrible pickup lines - the most memorable was checking the tag of my sweatshirt and reporting to all attending that it said "Made in Heaven" (he still stands by this report to this day).  He asked me for my phone number, which I gave to him finally after giving him four wrong numbers (he is persistant).  We saw each other several times that week, then went on a date and quickly fell in love.

When We Got Engaged:
During our springbreak cruise- on March 15th, 2006

How It Happened:

After 5 years of dating, we both knew we were ready to commit to each other for life.  He had asked if I was ready, and I hinted that I was by taking him to the jewelers for ring shopping.  I also strongly hinted that I would like a sapphire ring, as I wanted something a little different.  We were preparing to go on a cruise to the Bahamas that left on March 13th.  He told me he had ordered the ring, but was vehement that the custom-made ring would not be ready until after we had left for the cruise.  On March 15th, the second full day of our cruise, we were supposed to stop at the cruiseline's private island, CocoCay.  However, the gusty winds prevented us from stopping there and so the ship spent the day at sea.  In late afternoon, we were looking at the water on the top deck as Andrew was taking pictures.  The sun was starting to set, so we went to the Viking Crown Lounge, a quiet lounge at the very top of the ship with a 360-degree view.  We sat a table overlooking the water, where I asked if the sapphire in the ring would be the same color as the water.  While I stared at the water, Andrew fumbled through his camera bag and produced the ring.  He held out the ring, asking if it was the right color.  I was stunned for a moment, then I started to cry as he got down on one knee.  He said the previous year had been the worst of his life (we had spent the year living 300 miles apart) and that he never wanted to be apart from me ever again.  He then asked if I would marry him.  I said yes and we kissed.  I was very surprised because EVERYONE except me knew, including my mom who was on the cruise.  I was especially surprised that everyone, specifically Andrew, had kept their mouths shut.  We found my mom below decks to announce the news, then returned to the Viking Crown Lounge for drinks and to watch the rest of the sunset.  It was surprising, romantic, and perfect.
